Black Business Initiative is an organization here in Halifax that helps African Nova Scotians to gain access to business related advice, training, financing, and additional resources.

Last year I became a registered client of theirs and was assigned a business development manager to help me with my business planning and start-up. They’re a great resource and asset to the black business community here. I’ve been fortunate to work with them to develop a few different items e-cards, massively large personal cards and now a new identity to represent a group they’ve launched called Progressive Roots Network. I invite you to join the movement via their Facebook page.

The group aims to attract and connect other young African Nova Scotian entrepreneurs and business owners to one another and to foster an environment where participants can be social and build partnerships.

The Identity

The group wanted to create an identity that represented African Nova Scotians and spoke to the notion of networking and community. The final result is an iconic use of hand rendered roots in a circular shape with an opening. The rendering is done in a rough gritty quality, reflecting a grassroots level group. The typefaces used are a modern selection which make an appeal to younger audiences. The golden yellow selection relateS TO the BBI’s identity and evokes a positive feeling. Unifying all these elements together, we were able to produce an iconic identity which boasts flexibility in various applications of size and context. As the group begins to grow, the identity will continue to be refined.
